Short answer
Anhydrous sodium metasilicate is the common choice for alkaline degreasing and pretreatment concentrates, where a high active per kilogram and low water content matter. Pentahydrate is the comparison where the make-up method needs a milder dissolution profile. The bath sits upstream of plating, phosphating or painting. The RFQ collects substrate, bath conditions, iron, water-insoluble matter, particle size and the rinse requirement.

Situation
Alkaline soak and spray degreasing baths for steel components, pretreatment lines feeding phosphating, plating or paint, buffering in built alkaline cleaner concentrates, electrolytic and ultrasonic cleaning formulations, and rust-preventive alkaline wash stages between machining operations. Anhydrous is the common choice where the concentrate needs a high active per kilogram and low water content. Pentahydrate is the comparison where the make-up method needs a milder dissolution profile.
What this RFQ typically confirms
- Substrate is the first input: steel, galvanised, aluminium, brass or a mixed line.
- Bath conditions to record are make-up concentration, operating temperature and working pH range. Those are buyer inputs. A dose is not inferred from the industry name.
- Iron and water-insoluble matter are read from the published grade specification and the batch COA. The buyer's own limits and test method belong on the RFQ.
- Particle size and the make-up method — manual charging, automatic dosing or a pre-dissolved concentrate — decide which form is reviewed.
- Anhydrous and pentahydrate are not interchangeable by weight. Crystal water changes the active content per kilogram.
- Compatibility with aluminium, zinc or other amphoteric metals is established by the buyer's coupon test at the buyer's bath conditions.
Qualitative outcome
The RFQ records substrate, bath conditions, the buyer's iron and insolubles limits, particle size and dissolution method, the rinse requirement, and the qualification plan.
Scope and limits
- Substrate compatibility and any corrosion-inhibition performance stay with the buyer's own coupon test.
- A bath formulation and a dose rate are not inferred from the industry name.
- Low-iron supply is confirmed per order against current production.
