How Much Metasilicate Replaces Soda Ash

Substituting soda ash with metasilicate is not a one-for-one swap by weight: the two carry different alkali content per kilogram, and the pentahydrate grade holds a substantial share of its mass as water of crystallisation — which changes your dosage, your container count and your freight cost per tonne of active alkali.

A 20-foot container takes 27 tonnes loaded loose, or about 22 tonnes palletised — palletising costs you roughly 18% of your payload. Where your receiving warehouse can break bulk by hand, loose loading in 25 kg bags gives the lower landed cost per tonne. We publish these terms because they change your cost model before price does.

Will switching from soda ash change the pH of my formulation?
Yes. Metasilicate solutions sit higher on the pH scale than equivalent carbonate solutions and buffer more strongly, so pH holds steadier as soil load increases through the wash cycle. Verify against your own specification before production.
Is sodium metasilicate safe on aluminium and zinc parts?
This is the main reason formulators switch. Silicate deposits a protective film on soft metals, where carbonate alkalinity alone can etch aluminium. It is standard practice in transport and aerospace cleaning formulations for this reason.
Does sodium metasilicate cake during ocean freight?
Both grades are hygroscopic and both can cake in humid transit.
